How the finder works

  1. 01

    Your starting point

Share your location, or type a ZIP code, town or county. Your coordinates stay in your browser: the finder downloads the list of sites for your area and measures the distances on your device.

  2. 02

    Narrow it down

Pick what you are getting rid of. Sites whose records list it come first; general landfills and transfer stations that usually take ordinary household items follow, marked “call to confirm”. Filter by open now, open Saturday or Sunday and kind of site, and by published fee where sites near you post one.

  3. 03

    Call, then drive

Each result has a call button, directions and a full listing with hours, fees, accepted materials and the sources they come from. Rules change, so a one-minute call saves a wasted trip.

Questions people ask

Is the dump open today?

Turn on “Open now” in the finder. It reads each site’s posted hours on the site’s own clock, so a site in another time zone is shown correctly. We can read the hours of 2,164 of the 12,548 open sites on file; for the rest, and on holidays, call before you drive over.

Are dumps open on Saturday or Sunday?

Of the 2,106 sites whose full weekly hours we can read, 1,526 open on Saturdays and 347 on Sundays. Use the Open Saturday and Open Sunday filters to see which ones are near you.

How much does it cost to use the dump?

Each operator sets its own prices: by weight at the scale, by load or vehicle, by item, and in some places free or reduced for residents. 9 sites on file publish a fee, and the finder shows it on the result. To estimate a load before you go, use the dump fee calculator.

Can anyone use the dump, or is it for residents only?

It depends on the site. Some county and town sites serve only their residents, and others charge residents a lower rate or ask for a permit or sticker. A listing says “residents only” when the operator says so; otherwise check the listing or call. Bring a driver’s license or utility bill that shows your address.

What should I bring to the dump?

Proof of address if the site is residents-only or has resident rates, a way to pay that the site accepts, and a tarp and straps so nothing blows out of the load on the road. The full checklist is in our hauling guide.

Which kind of site do I need?

It depends on what is in the load. Household trash and bulky items usually go to a landfill, transfer station or county drop-off; concrete, drywall and shingles to a construction debris landfill or recycler; paint, batteries and chemicals to a household hazardous waste site; and tires to a tire recycler. Pick what you are getting rid of in the finder and it sorts the sites for you.
