Mattress disposal in Connecticut

Connecticut rules and programs

• Mattress recycling program

  Yes

Most town transfer stations take mattresses and box springs free from town residents through the Bye Bye Mattress program. A $19.50 recycling fee per unit is charged on new mattresses sold since October 1, 2026.

Connecticut passed the first mattress stewardship law (Public Act 13-42); the program began May 1, 2015. Heavily soiled, wet, frozen, moldy or bedbug-infested units: call the site first, fees may apply. Crib mattresses count; futons and bed frames do not.

• Secured load law

  Yes

Vehicles must be loaded so nothing drops, sifts or leaks in a way that is a hazard or nuisance, and every load and covering must be securely fastened. Each violation is an infraction.
