Tire disposal in Connecticut

24 sites in Connecticut are listed for old tires: 2 landfills, 19 transfer stations and 3 drop-off centers. The most are in Capitol Planning Region (7), Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region (4) and Western Connecticut Planning Region (4).

18 post hours and 19 publish a fee, and 5 say they serve residents only. A site is listed when its own record names old tires. Limits and fees differ, so call before you load up.

Connecticut rules and programs

  • Scrap tire disposal rules

    Yes

Connecticut does not allow tires in landfills, whole or in pieces. Connecticut Tire Stewardship, launched March 21, 2026, pays for free disposal of residents' tires at participating municipal transfer stations (23 active sites as of June 2026).

There is no state tire fee (it was repealed in 1997), and no statute requires retailers to take old tires, though DEEP says most do when you buy new ones.

  • Secured load law

    Yes

Vehicles must be loaded so nothing drops, sifts or leaks in a way that is a hazard or nuisance, and every load and covering must be securely fastened. Each violation is an infraction.
