Colorado rules and programs

  • Paint recycling program

    Yes

Leftover latex or oil-based house paint, primer, stain and varnish can be dropped off free at 223 PaintCare sites in Colorado, including retail stores and household hazardous waste sites. A PaintCare fee of $0.50–$2.25 per container is built into new paint.

Fee by size: $0.50 (over a half pint, under 1 gallon), $1.15 (1–2 gallons), $2.25 (over 2, up to 5 gallons). Bring paint in original labeled, lidded containers up to 5 gallons; every site accepts up to 5 gallons per visit, some more. No aerosols, thinners or solvents. 100+ gallons: free pickup.

  • Battery disposal rules

    Yes

Car (lead-acid) batteries are banned from Colorado's trash and landfills. Stores that sell them must take your used battery when you buy a new one; any deposit must be at least $10 and is refunded if you return the old battery within 30 days.

Household batteries: under Colorado's Battery Stewardship Act of 2025, retailers may sell only batteries covered by an approved recycling plan from August 1, 2027. Until a program runs, EPA says keep rechargeable, lithium and button batteries out of the trash.
