It is a crime to put a car battery in Minnesota garbage. Stores selling lead-acid batteries must accept up to five used ones at a time free, even with no purchase; buying without a trade-in adds a $10 deposit, refunded within 30 days.

Rechargeable batteries, and products with built-in rechargeable batteries, are banned from household trash in Minnesota. EPA says alkaline batteries can usually go in the trash.
