    Leftover latex or oil-based house paint, primer, stain and varnish can be dropped off free at 81 PaintCare sites in Vermont, including retail stores and household hazardous waste sites. A PaintCare fee of $0.65–$2.45 per container is built into new paint.

    Fee by size: $0.65 (over a half pint, under 1 gallon), $1.35 (1–2 gallons), $2.45 (over 2, up to 5 gallons). Bring paint in original labeled, lidded containers up to 5 gallons; every site accepts up to 5 gallons per visit, some more. No aerosols, thinners or solvents. 100+ gallons: free pickup.

  • Battery disposal rules

    All household batteries, single-use and rechargeable, plus e-bike and mower batteries up to 25 pounds, are banned from Vermont garbage and go free to drop-off sites run by The Battery Network. Car batteries are banned from landfills; sellers must take old ones back.

    Damaged, swollen or leaking batteries should go only to Vermont solid waste entities. Tape terminals or bag batteries before dropping them off. Car battery sellers may add a refundable core charge.
