  • Paint recycling program

    Yes

    Leftover latex or oil-based house paint, primer, stain and varnish can be dropped off free at 378 PaintCare sites in Illinois (running since December 2025), including retail stores and household hazardous waste sites. A PaintCare fee of $0.45–$1.95 per container is built into new paint.

    Fee by size: $0.45 (over a half pint, under 1 gallon), $0.95 (1–2 gallons), $1.95 (over 2, up to 5 gallons). Bring paint in original labeled, lidded containers up to 5 gallons; every site accepts up to 5 gallons per visit, some more. No aerosols, thinners or solvents. 100+ gallons: free pickup.

  • Battery disposal rules

    Yes

    Illinois has free household battery drop-off sites (single-use and rechargeable) under its battery stewardship law, and the state EPA says not to put batteries in curbside trash. Car batteries are banned from landfills; sellers must take old ones back.

    Producers have had to join an approved stewardship plan since January 1, 2026; The Battery Network runs it (approved October 29, 2025). Throwing covered batteries in the trash becomes illegal January 1, 2028. Damaged batteries go only to authorized sites.
