New Jersey rules and programs

  • Paint recycling program

    No

New Jersey has no paint stewardship law, so there is no PaintCare network of free paint drop-off sites (PaintCare runs programs only in 12 states and DC). Ask your local household hazardous waste program what paint it takes.

EPA lists paint among household products that can contain hazardous ingredients and points people to local household hazardous waste collections instead of drains or, in some cases, the regular trash.

  • Battery disposal rules

    Yes

Car (lead-acid) batteries are banned from New Jersey's trash and landfills. Stores that sell them must take your used battery when you buy a new one, and may add a refundable core charge until you bring the old one back.

New Jersey also makes it illegal to knowingly throw nickel-cadmium and small sealed lead rechargeable batteries in the trash. EPA says alkaline batteries can usually go in household trash.
