North Carolina rules and programs

  • Paint recycling program

    No

North Carolina has no paint stewardship law, so there is no PaintCare network of free paint drop-off sites (PaintCare runs programs only in 12 states and DC). Ask your local household hazardous waste program what paint it takes.

EPA lists paint among household products that can contain hazardous ingredients and points people to local household hazardous waste collections instead of drains or, in some cases, the regular trash.

  • Battery disposal rules

    Partly

North Carolina bans lead-acid (car) batteries from landfills, incinerators and waste-to-energy plants; the law sends them to battery retailers, wholesalers, lead smelters or recycling facilities. It does not follow the model store take-back law.

For household batteries, EPA says alkaline ones can usually go in the trash, but take rechargeable, lithium and button batteries to a battery drop-off or household hazardous waste site.
