California rules and programs

  • Paint recycling program

    Yes

Leftover latex or oil-based house paint, primer, stain and varnish can be dropped off free at 823 PaintCare sites in California, including retail stores and household hazardous waste sites. A PaintCare fee of $0.30–$1.50 per container is built into new paint.

Fee by size: $0.30 (over a half pint, under 1 gallon), $0.65 (1–2 gallons), $1.50 (over 2, up to 5 gallons). Bring paint in original labeled, lidded containers up to 5 gallons; every site accepts up to 5 gallons per visit, some more. No aerosols, thinners or solvents. 100+ gallons: free pickup.

  • Battery disposal rules

    Yes

Every battery, from AA and button cells to car batteries, is banned from California trash. Take household batteries to a household hazardous waste collection. Car battery sellers must take your old one when you buy new and charge a deposit, refunded within 45 days.

California's Responsible Battery Recycling Act (AB 2440) requires producers of household batteries to fund a collection and recycling program; lead-acid batteries are excluded from it.
