  • Battery disposal rules

    Yes

Car batteries may not go in New York trash. Battery stores must accept up to two used lead-acid batteries a month from anyone at no charge; buying without a trade-in adds a $5 fee, refunded if you return a battery within 30 days.

Rechargeable batteries under 50 pounds, including e-bike and e-scooter batteries, may not go in the trash, and stores that sell rechargeable batteries must take back used ones of a similar type, up to ten a day, free. EPA says alkaline batteries can usually go in household trash.
